What does the Bible say about giving?
Generosity is an essential aspect of spiritual maturity and discipleship. Giving through the local church emphasizes our faith, hope and love.
Faith
Giving is faith in action. It reveals and matures our faith. Really, faithful financial stewardship has more to do with believing God than it does giving money. It ultimately recognizes God as the Source of everything we possess or will gain. It confirms our confidence in God’s willingness and ability to provide. Giving recognizes God as our true Provider and the giver of all good things. As you give it evidences your faith and simultaneously matures your faith.
Hope
Giving reveals what you hope in, are hoping for and where your hope is placed. The Scriptures encourage us to hope in God and God alone (Psalm 42:5; 43:5; 62:5 78:7; Romans 5:2; 1 Timothy 1:1). Giving reflects whether our hope is set on the world and earthly things or on God and heavenly matters. Only God is worthy of our hope for only He can genuinely and completely save, heal and satisfy us.
Love
Giving is a response to God’s great gift of His Son and our delight in helping others come to know Christ (John 17:3) and eternal life. Jesus informed us that our treasures reveal our hearts (Matthew 6:21). A Christian’s check book or ATM statement reveals the passion of a believer’s life. In addition, there is no such thing as worship without giving. Worship gives God what His due Him and what is due Him is our faith, hope and love. Take time to reflect on your last month’s financial activity. Does it reveal a passion for God and His kingdom? Giving partners you with God’s great redemptive work around the world. In what or whom do you have faith? On whom or what are you hoping? Whom or what do you really love? All of these questions are answered by a Christian’s faithful financial stewardship. Through giving, you can express and mature in faith, hope and love; a blessing too great and essential to Christianity for you to miss. Start today!
