Childrens Ministry

A Philosophy of Ministry to Children and Parents:

To Hope in God

He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach their children; that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.
(Psalm 78:5-8)

This biblical text presents the basis for Children’s Ministries at Heritage. It defines why we exist, drives our material and programs, fuels our passion for ministry to parents and children and expresses our desire for the children of our congregation to surpass this present generation in faith, knowledge, righteousness, fruitfulness, service and exuberance for world evangelization. Our hope is that the next generation will “walk in truth” (3 John 1:4).

Heritage’s conviction is that it is a family’s responsibility to obey Deuteronomy 6 as God’s means of fulfilling Genesis 12:3. Thus, knowledgeable of God’s command and aware of the world’s agenda, we are possessed by God’s vision for our children in His global redemptive scheme. Aware of our own shortcomings we humbly covenant with parents to trust in God’s all-sufficient grace for the salvation and discipleship of their children. So it is that with enlivening urgency Heritage’s children’s ministries has accepted the task of assisting parents in their divinely given mandate.

A caveat concerning parents: Heritage parents treasure children as gifts from God and recognize their stewardship responsibilities for those gifts. Every parent will one day be called into accountability for their parenting labors.

Both Testaments of the Bible consistently and explicitly lay upon parents the primary privilege and responsibility for teaching and modeling God’s truths to children (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 1:4). It is crucial that parents possess a clear understanding of this divine mandate so that the biblical responsibility given to parents is not ignored and placed on the church.

God’s first command to parents is to love Him as Christians (Deuteronomy 6:5). Adults are to keep God’s word in their hearts (Deuteronomy 6:6). After this, are parents commanded to teach their children God’s commands.
