The Comfort of God’s Word

Psalm 119:49–56 (Zayin)

The Big Idea: God’s promises do more than comfort us in affliction; they sustain our faith, shape our worship, and keep us walking with Him through the darkest nights. This stanza shows us how that happens -

First: God’s Promises Sustain Our Hope in Affliction (vv. 49–50)

a)    The psalmist appeals to God’s faithfulness.

1.    “Remember your word to your servant.”

2.    He asks God to act according to His promises.

b)    The psalmist anchors his hope in God’s Word.

1.    His confidence is not in changing circumstances.

2.    His confidence is in God’s unchanging promises.

c)    The psalmist finds life in God’s promise.

1.    Affliction is real.

2.    God’s Word gives life in the midst of it.

APP: Hope in God’s promises produces comfort in our present afflictions.

Second: God’s Truth Steadies Us When the World Opposes Us (vv. 51–52)

a)    The psalmist endures the mockery of the proud.

1.    The insolent reject God’s authority.

2.    They ridicule those who follow Him.

b)    The psalmist remains steadfast.

1.    He refuses to turn away from God’s law.

2.    Opposition does not alter his allegiance.

c)    The psalmist remembers God’s faithfulness.

1.    He recalls God’s judgments “from of old.”

2.    The past faithfulness of God strengthens present faith.

APP: The psalmist finds stability by anchoring his life in God’s proven faithfulness.

Third: God’s Word Gives Us a Song in the Night (vv. 53–56)

a)    The psalmist grieves over the rejection of God’s Word.

1.    His indignation is rooted in love for God’s truth.

2.    He is grieved by rebellion against God.

b)    The psalmist sings during his pilgrimage.

1.    God’s statutes become his songs.

2.    God’s Word accompanies him through a fallen world.

c)    The psalmist remembers God in the night.

1.    He recalls God’s character when fears arise.

2.    Remembering God sustains his obedience.

d)    The psalmist recognizes the blessing.

1.    God’s comfort has kept him faithful.

2.    Continued obedience is itself a gift of grace.

APP: God’s comfort doesn’t just make us feel better; it enables us to keep walking with Him.

Fourth: This Is Where the Gospel Meets Us

a)    The Father commands this.

1.    Trust My promises.

2.    Remember My Word.

3.    Remain faithful.

b)    The Son fulfills this.

1.    Jesus perfectly trusted the Father’s promises.

2.    Jesus perfectly obeyed the Father’s Word.

3.    Jesus endured the ultimate night on our behalf.

c)    The Spirit enables this.

1.    He reminds us of God’s promises.

2.    He strengthens weary hearts.

3.    He sustains faithful obedience.

Conclusion: The movement of Zayin is both simple and profound:

• Affliction comes.

• Opposition comes.

• Long nights come.

Yet God’s Word becomes:

• Our hope.

• Our comfort.

• Our song.

• Our strength.

The night may remain. The affliction may remain. But God’s promises remain as well. And

God’s promises are stronger than our afflictions. Well glory.
