Psalm 119 - Outline
The Blessed Life is A Bible-Shaped Life Psalm 119:1–8
Introduction:
· Psalm 119 opens with definition, and a desire, not a directive
· This stanza introduces the heart and theme of the entire psalm
· The blessed life is connected to God’s Word
First: The Blessed Life Walks According to God’s Word (1–3)
Second: The Blessed Life Requires Steadfast Obedience (4–5)
Third: The Blessed Life Produces Confidence, Praise and Dependence (6–8)
Fourth: This is Where the Gospel Meets us
Conclusion:
· The blessed life is created by the Bible
· It is formed through obedience
· It produces single-hearted joy
CG Leader: At the fourth point in every Psalm 119 sermon, just like at one point in every daily devotion, I’m going to use that point to demonstrate the grace-based fulfilment of this verse. I’ll do so by pointing to the Trinity in a manner something like this –
1 - The Father Commands This
· God’s Word reveals what God desires for His people
· The command is holy, good, and life-giving
· Obeying His commands creates the blessed life
2 - The Son Fulfills This
· Jesus perfectly embodies the very thing Psalm 119 calls for
· He succeeds where we fail
· He obeys in our place
· He bears our failure at the cross
And there will always be a concrete example of where Jesus fulfilled this, like John 8:29 - I always do the things that are pleasing to him.
This demonstrates how Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf, so our obeying God is not moralism,
gaining God’s approval or winning our salvation. Instead, it is….
3 - The Holy Spirit Enabling the Christian Life
· The Christian life is not self-powered obedience
· The Spirit forms the life of Christ within us
· What God commands, the Spirit progressively creates in His people
